Case Study: Increasing Donor Engagement Through Email Newsletters
Client: Arizona Women's Recovery Center (AWRC)
Role: Marketing & Development Manager
Duration of Case Study: January - Present
Objective:
To increase engagement among AWRC's donor base by transitioning from sporadic email communication, to a consistent, branded monthly newsletter that offers transparency, agency updates, and donor/community partner recognition.
Strategy:
Monthly Newsletter Campaign - Content Goals
-
Design and distribute one newsletter per month for 12 months
-
Include success stories, program updates, and calls to action
-
Ensure visual consistency and accessibility across devices
-
Increase transparency about AWRC's impact
-
Celebrate donor contributions with spotlights
-
Encourage continued support and interaction
Design Approach:
-
Clean, mobile-friendly layout
-
Cost-effective (reduced rate for nonprofit)
-
Use of AWRC brand colors and fonts
-
Visual hierarchy to guide readers through stories and call to actions
-
Inclusion or photos, infographics, and testimonials
Newsletter Example:
*Note: Content has been modified to protect client confidentiality. In the original version, the second page featured a summer-themed collage of client images that visually complemented the introductory paragraph on the first page. Additional pages have also been omitted due to relevance.
Key Findings:
-
Engagement increased compared to previous email campaigns (48.4% vs 45% open rate)
-
Doubled the nonprofit industry standard for newsletter open rates (Standard: 28.59%; AWRC: 48.4%)
-
Donors responded positively to transparency and storytelling via written and verbal feedback
-
This was AWRC's first newsletter initiative since the early 2000s, marking a significant shift in communication strategy

Next Steps & Optimization:
*Campaign is still ongoing, so this is recommended based on current data.
-
Shorten newsletter length to improve click-through rates
-
Add more success stories to deepen emotional connection
-
Segment donor lists and offer frequency preferences (i.e. monthly vs quarterly)
-
Launch a donor survey in January to guide future content strategy
